TEMPERATURE

WINTER 2009-10: The season featured a strong negative NAO and a mostly positive PNA index.  The temperature for the season averaged 34.1F and tied with the winter of 1992-93 as the 14th warmest such season. The winter season was also the 8th consecutive winter with above normal temperatures.

SPRING 2010: In March, the temperature averaged 48.8F and was the warmest such month on record (1977). Only 2 days averaged below normal.  Temperature extremes included 76F on the 19th and 28F on the 27th. The month of April, the temperature averaged 58.1F and was the warmest such month on record (1977). The month was also the second consecutive month of above normal temperatures. Only 4 days averaged below normal.  Temperature extremes included 92F on the 7th and 38F on the 28th. The season averaged 57.7F and was the warmest spring on record.

 

SUMMER 2010: The temperature in July averaged 80.8F and was near normal. The month tied with 1993 and 1999 as the hottest July on record (1977). The month was also the 5th consecutive month with above normal temperatures. Only 3 days averaged below normal.  Temperature extremes included 102F on the 6th and 61F on the 2nd. The temperature for the season averaged 77.4F and ranked as the warmest such season on record. There was a total of 28 days with maximum temperatures of 90F or higher.

AUTUMN 2010: For the season the temperature averaged 59F and tied with 1990 as the 3rd warmest such season on record and the 8th consecutive such season on record.

PRECIPITATION

 

WINTER 2009-10: The period Dec-Jan. ranked as the 10th wettest period on record and the wettest since 2005-06. The period was also the 2nd consecutive such period with above normal precipitation. Snowfall was below normal with only 1.5 inches.  The month ranked as the 5th least snowiest such month on record and the least since 1993. A total of 13.77 inches was record for the season and ranked as the 7th wettest such season on record and the wettest since 1977-78. The period Jan-Feb a total of 7.08 inches of precipitation was recorded and ranked as the 20th driest such seasons on record and the driest since 1988. Snowfall totaled 35.7 and ranked as the 5th snowiest such season on record and the most since 1979. 

 

SPRING 2010: In April, precipitation totaled 3.66 inches and tied with April 1979 as the 17th driest such month on record. There were only 7 days with measurable precipitation (normal is 12). A total of 16.42 inches of precipitation fell in spring and ranked as the 6th wettest such season on record and the wettest since 1998. The period April-May ranked as the 15th driest such period on record with 7.11 inches of precipitation.  This period was the driest such period since 1998.

 

SUMMER 2010: Precipitation totaled 2.48 inches in June and ranked as the 8th driest such month on record and the driest since 1995.  The month was also the 3rd consecutive month with below normal precipitation. There were only 7 days with measurable precipitation (normal is 10). The most received in a 24-hour period was 1.10 inches on the 9th-10th. Precipitation totaled 3.58 inches in July and ranked as the 17th driest such month on record and the driest since 1992.  The month was also the 4th consecutive month with below normal precipitation. There were only 6 days with measurable precipitation (normal is 9). No rain fell during the first 13 days of the month. The most received in a 24-hour period was 1.90 inches on the 14th. Since the 14th, rainfall was little or non-existing. Precipitation totaled 4.14 inches in August and ranked as the 16th wettest such month on record and the driest since 1994.  The month was also the 2nd consecutive such month with above normal precipitation. There were 8 days with measurable precipitation. Rainfall was generally light and sparse through the first 21 days of the month causing the New Jersey EPA to issue a Drought Watch for northeast New Jersey. From the 22nd-25th, a total of 3.58 inches of rain fell. This resulted in the Drought Watch to be lifted. Precipitation for the season totaled 10.20 inches and raked as the 12th driest such season on record and the driest since 1992. The period July-August a total of 7.72 inches od rain was recorded and ranked as the 16th driest such period on record and the driest since 2006. 

 

AUTUMN 2010: Precipitation in September totaled 4.17 inches and ranked as the 13th wettest such month on record and the driest since 1978.  The month was also the 2nd consecutive such month with above normal precipitation. There were 8 days with measurable precipitation. Rainfall was generally light and sparse through the first half of the month. Most of the month’s rainfall fell from the 27th-20th. The most received in a 24-hour period was 1.55 inches on the 30th which broke the old record for the day of .83” set in 1983. A total of 11.29 inches was recorded for the season. The season ranked as the 17th wettest such season on record and the wettest since 1988.  The period Sep-Oct ranked as the 12th wettest such period on record and the wettest since 1993. The period was also the 3rd consecutive such period of above normal precipitation. The period Oct-Nov a total of 7.12 inches and ranked as the 4th driest such season on record and the driest since 1991. The period was also the 2nd consecutive such period on record with below normal precipitation.
