TEMPERATURE

 

WINTER 2010-11: December into February the pattern was dominated by a ridge in the West and a trough in the East.  Strong blocking was observed in the high latitudes.  There was a negative NAO and a positive PNA and a negative AO. The temperature in December averaged 32.7F and was 4.2 degrees below normal. The month ranked as the 6th coldest such month on record (1977) and the coldest since 1985. The month was also the 2nd consecutive such month with below normal temperatures and the 2nd consecutive month with below normal temperatures. The temperature in January averaged 30.1F and was 1.5 degrees below normal. The month ranked as the 12th coldest such month on record (1977) and the coldest since 1996.  The month was also the 3rd consecutive month with below normal temperatures.  Nineteen days average near or above normal. The temperature in February averaged 35.1F and was 5.2 degrees above normal. The pattern revered with a trough ion the West and a ridge in the East. The AO and the NAO were positive. The month tied with February 2006 as the 13th warmest such month.  Twelve days averaged near or below normal. Temperature extremes included 69F on the 18th and 13F on the 11th. There were 8 days with maximums of 50F or higher and 2 days with maximums of 60F or higher. There were only 3 days with maximums of 32F or lower.

 

SPRING 2010: The month of March featured a positive NAO index, a negative PNA index the first half of the month and a positive PNA the last half. The AO index was positive. The month also had a brief return of a blocking in the high latitude.  This brought a return of snow and cold. The temperature averaged 42.3F and was 1.1 degrees below normal. The month tied with March 2006 and 2007 as the 15th coldest such month. Twelve days averaged near or below normal. Temperature extremes included 77F on the 18th and 20F on the 3rd. There were 16 days with maximums of 50F or higher, and 3 days with maximums of 60F or higher and one day with maximums of 70F or higher. There was only 1 day with maximums of 32F or lower and 14 days with minimums of 32F or lower. The month of April featured a generally positive NAO index and a positive AO index. The month also had a return of a blocking in the high latitude at the end of the month as the AO index trended negative.  The temperature averaged 54.5F and was normal. The month ranked as the 12th warmest such month on record and the warmest since 2006.  The month was also the 2nd consecutive such month with above normal temperatures. Eighteen days had maximums of 60F or higher and 8 days with maximums of 70F or higher.  There were also 2 days with maximums of 80F or higher. Temperature extremes included 85F on the 11th and 35F on the 1st.  The month featured a generally negative NAO index and a positive PNA index. The month also had a return of a blocking in the high latitude at the end of the month as the AO index trended negative.   The temperature averaged 63.8F and was 1.1 degrees below normal. The month ranked as the 12th warmest such month on record and the warmest since 2009.  Only 7 days averaged near or below normal.  There were 7 days with maximums of 80F or higher and 6 days with minimums of 50F or lower. Temperature extremes included 88F on the 30th and 46F on the 6th  The temperature for the season was 53.8F and ranked as the 20th coldest such season on record and the coldest since 2009.

 

SUMMER 2010: The temperature in June averaged 80.2F and was 0.9F degrees below normal. The month ranked as the 12th warmest such month on record (since 1977) and the warmest since 1986.  The month was also the 2nd consecutive month with below normal temperatures. Only 10 days averaged near or below normal.  There were 18 days with maximums of 80F or higher and 3 days with Maximums of 90F or lower. Temperature extremes included 97F on the 9th and 54F on the 17th. The temperature in July averaged 80.0F and was 0.2F degrees below normal. The month ranked as the 3rd warmest such month on record and the warmest since 1994.  The month was also the 2nd consecutive such month with above normal temperatures. Only 4 days averaged near or below normal.  There were 14 days with maximums of 90F or higher. Temperature extremes included 102F on the 22d and 63F on the 12th.  The temperature in August averaged 75F and was 1.5F degrees below normal. The month ranked as the 17th warmest such month on record and the warmest since 1981.  The month was also the 3rd consecutive such month with above normal temperatures. Twelve days averaged near or below normal.  There were only 2 days with maximums of 90F or higher. Nine days had maximum below 80F. Temperature extremes included 92F on the 1st and 58F on the 29th.  The season averaged 75.9F and tied with 2002 as the 8th warmest such season on record.  The season was also the 2nd consecutive such month with above normal temperatures.

 

AUTUMN 2010: The temperature in September averaged 70.1 and was normal. The month ranked as the 6th warmest such month on record (since 1977) and the warmest since 2007.  The month was also the 2nd consecutive such month with above normal temperatures. Eight days averaged near or below normal.  There were 13 days with maximums of 80F or higher. Temperature extremes included 87F on the 4th and 50F on the 16th. The temperature in October averaged 57.2 and was 0.8 below normal. The month ranked as the 11th warmest such month on record (since 1977) and the warmest since 2001.  The month was also the 4th consecutive such month with below above normal temperatures. Eleven days averaged near or below normal.  There were 3 days with maximums of 80F or higher. Temperature extremes included 85F on the 9th and 32F on the 31st.  The temperature in November averaged 51.7 and was 3.4 above normal. The month ranked as the 2nd warmest such month on record (since 1977) and the warmest since 1979.  Only 5 days averaged near or below normal. There were 6 days with maximums of 70F or higher. Temperature extremes included 75F on the 8th and 32F on the 6th .  The fall season averaged 59.7F and ranked as the warmest such season on record.

 

PRECIPITATION

 

WINTER 2009-10: Precipitation in December totaled 3.52 inches and ranked as the 19th wettest such month on record and the wettest since 1997.  The month was also the 4th consecutive such month with near to above normal precipitation. There were 5 days with measurable precipitation. Most of the month’s rainfall fell during the first half of the month. The most to fall in a 24 hour period was 1.50 inches which occurred on the 1st which was a record for the day. Snowfall was above normal with 19.1 inches.  The most received in a 24-hour period was 15.0 inches on the 26th which was a record for the day. Precipitation in January totaled 3.39 inches and ranked as the 21st driest such month on record and the driest since 2004. The month was alsi the 4th consecutive such month with below normal precipitation. There were 10 days with measurable precipitation. Most of the month’s rainfall fell on the 26th-27th.  Snowfall was also above normal with 35.8 inches.  This January was the snowiest on record (1976-77-2010). The most received in a 24-hour period was 18.0 inches on the 26th-27th. Precipitation in February totaled 3.94 inches and ranked as the 11th wettest such month on record and the driest since 1986. The month was also the 2nd consecutive such month with above normal precipitation. There were 8 days with measurable precipitation. The most to fall in a 24-hour period was 1.81 inches on the 24th and the 25th.  Snowfall was below normal for the first time this season. with only 4.5 inches.  The month ranked as the 1th least snowiest such month and the least since 1997. The most received in a 24-hour period was 3.0 inches on the 21st.

 

SPRING 2010: Precipitation in March totaled 7.20 inches and ranked as the 5th wettest such month on record and the driest since 1977. The month was also the 2nd consecutive month with above normal precipitation and the 2nd consecutive such month with above normal precipitation. There were 10 days with measurable precipitation. The most to fall in a 24-hour period was 2.70 inches on the 6th-7th.  Snowfall was below normal with only 3.0 inches.  The month tied with March 1998 and 2003 as the 7th least snowiest such month on record.  The month was also the 2nd consecutive such month with below normal snowfall. For the season, a total of 62.4 inches of snow was recorded and ranked as the 2nd snowiest season on record and the snowiest since 1995-96. The most received in a 24-hour period was 3.0 inches on the 23-24th. Precipitation April totaled 6.75 inches and ranked as the 4th wettest such month on record and the wettest since 1980. The month was also the 3rd consecutive month with above normal precipitation. There were 14 days with measurable precipitation. The most to fall in a 24-hour period was 2.53 inches on the 16th-17th.  Precipitation in May totaled 6.60 inches and ranked as the 6th wettest such month on record and the wettest since 1979. The month was also the 4th consecutive month with above normal precipitation. The month was featured a closed low during the mid-month period with heavy rainfall.  Most of the months rainfall occurred during the 15th-23rd with 5.72 inches of rain was recorded. There were 10 days with measurable precipitation. The most to fall in a 24-hour period was 2.36 inches on the 18th.  Then conditions turned milder and drier. A total of 20.55 inches of precipitation was record for the season and ranked as the 3rd wettest such season and the wettest since 1984.  The period April-May a total of 13.35 inches of rain was recorded and ranked as the 3rd wettest such period on record.

 

SUMMER 2010: Precipitation in June totaled 4.63 inches and ranked as the 8th wettest such month on record and the wettest since 2004. The month was also the 5th consecutive month with above normal precipitation. Most of the month’s rainfall fell on the 17th when a cold front moved through.  That day recorded the most in a 24 hour period with 2.63 inches. There were 8 days with measurable precipitation. There were 19 clear days and 5 overcast days. Precipitation in July was different from past month with only 1.81 inches and tied with July 2011 as the 2nd driest such month on record. Most of the month’s rainfall fell during the last six days of the month.  The most to fall in a 24 hour period was on the 29th with .75 of an inch. There were 7 days with measurable precipitation. The precipitation in August featured record precipitation with 15.52 inches and ranked as the wettest such month on record and the wettest since 1990. The most to fall in a 24 hour period was on the 14th with 4.72 inches and was from a non-tropical system. This was more than Hurricane Irene produced in a 24 hour period with 4.10 inches. There were 21 clear days and 4 overcast days. The period July-August a total of 17.33 inches of rain was record and ranked as the wettest such period on record. A total of 21.96 inches of rain was recorded for the season and was also the wettest such season on record and the wettest since 2009.

AUTUMN 2010: Record rainfall was again recorded in September. The month received 9.89 inches of rain and ranked as the wettest such month on record and the wettest since 2004. The month was also the 2nd consecutive month of record and above normal precipitation.   The most to fall in a 24 hour period was on the 6th with 3.68 inches. Above normal precipitation was again observed in October with 4.64 inches recorded.  The month ranked as the 11th wettest such month on record and the wettest since 2010. The month was also the 3rd consecutive month and the 3rd consecutive such month with above precipitation.  The most received in a 24-hour period was 1.11 inches on the 19th-20th. Also, 4.0 inches of snow was received on the 29th making this October the snowiest on record (since 1976). It was also a record for any day in October. Above normal precipitation was observed in November with 4.24 inches recorded.  The month ranked as the 12th wettest such month on record and the wettest since 1992. The month was also the 4th consecutive month with above precipitation.  The most received in a 24-hour period was 1.77 inches on the 22nd. Precipitation totaled 18.77 inches and is the 2nd wettest such season on record and the wettest since 1979. The period Oct-Nov. 8.88 inches of precipitation was recorded.  This was the 9th wettest such period on record and the wettest since 1979.

Temperature extremes included 102F on July 22nd and 4F on January 4th. Precipitation totaled 73.61 and ranked as the wettest year on record (since 1977).  This was the wettest year since 1983 with 69.07 inches. The wettest month was August with 15.52 inches recorded. The wettest period was Jun-August with 21.96 inches recorded. Snowfall totaled 42.7 inches and was the 4th consecutive year with above normal snowfall.
