TEMPERATURE

WINTER 2013-14: The temperature for December 2013 averaged 36.9 degrees and was 4.4 degrees below normal.  The month tied with December 2008 as the 14^th warmest such month on record (1977). The month was also the 3^rd consecutive such month with below normal temperatures.  The month was the 11^th consecutive month with near or below normal temperatures.  Fourteen days averaged near to above normal. There was 9 day with a maximum of 50F or higher, 3 days with maximums of 60F or higher and 1 day with a maximum of 70 degrees. There were 21 days with minimums of 32F or lower. There were 3 days with maximums of 32F or lower. Temperature extremes included 70F on the 22^nd and 17F on the 25^th.            

The temperature for January 2014 averaged 28.0 degrees and was 4.0 degrees below normal.  The month ranked as the 11^th coldest such month on record and the coldest since 1996. The month was also the 12^th consecutive month with below normal temperatures. Twelve days averaged near or above normal. There were 3 day with a maximum of 50F or higher, 13 days with maximums of 31F or lower, and 27 days with minimums of 32F or lower. Temperature extremes included 58F on the 11^th and 3F on the 7^th.            

The temperature for February 2014 averaged 30.1 degrees and was 3.9F degrees below normal.  The month tied with February 1988 as the 8^th coldest such month on record. The month was also the 13^th consecutive month with below normal temperatures. Eight days averaged near or above normal. There were 4 day with a maximum of 50F or higher, 6 days with maximums of 32F or lower, and 27 days with minimums of 32F or lower. Temperature extremes included 55F on the 6^th and 7F on the 28^th.            

The season was characterized by a positive NAO, a negative AO and a negative PNA. The Negative AO allowed by arctic air masses into the East. The temperature averaged 31.7 degrees and ranked as the 7^th coldest such season on record and the coldest since 2002-03. 

SPRING: The temperature for March 2014 averaged 37.1 degrees and was 7.8F degrees below normal.  The month ranked as the 3^rd coldest such month on record (since 1977) and the coldest since 1978. The month was also the 3^rd consecutive such month with below normal temperatures. There were 10 days with maximums of 50 degrees and higher and 3 days with maximums of 60 degrees and higher. There were 2 days with maximums of 32 and lower and 19 days with minimums of 32F or lower. Temperature extremes included 57F on the 11^th and 11F on the 4^th. 

The temperature for April 2014 averaged 51.6 degrees and was 1.4F degrees below normal.  The month ranked as the 10^th coldest such month on record (since 1977) and the coldest since 1995. The month was also the 2^nd consecutive such month with below normal temperatures and also the 6^th consecutive month with below normal temperatures. There were 6 days with temperatures near or above normal, and 2 days with maximums of 80 degrees and higher.  There was only 1 day with minimums of 32F or lower. Temperature extremes included 81F on the 14^th and 29F on the 8^th. 

The temperature for May 2014 averaged 64 degrees and was 2.7F below normal.  The month tied with May 2000 as the 10^th warmest such month on record (since 1977) and the 7^th consecutive month with below normal temperatures. SUMMER 2014: The temperature for June 2014 averaged 72.7 degrees and was 1.9F below normal.  The month ranked as the 11^th warmest such month on record (since 1977) and the warmest since 2001. The month was also the 6^th consecutive month with below normal temperatures and also the 4^th consecutive such month with below normal temperatures. There were 10 days that averaged near or above normal. There were 3 days with maximums of 90F and higher. Temperature extremes included 94F on the 17^th and 51F on the 1^st.

The temperature for July 2014 averaged 77.5 degrees and was 3.4F below normal.  The month ranked as the 16^th coldest such month on record (since 1977) and the coldest since 2005. The month was also the 9^th consecutive month with below normal temperatures. There were 10 days that averaged near or above normal. There were 8 days with maximums of 90F and higher. Temperature extremes included 98F on the 8^th and 60F on the 30^th.

The temperature for August 2014 averaged 74.7 degrees and was 4.0F below normal.  The month ranked as the 11^th coldest such month on record (since 1977) and the coldest since 1987.  There were only 6 days with near to above normal temperatures. There were 5 days with maximums of 90F and higher. Temperature extremes included 98F on the 10^th and 57F on the 15^th

The season averaged 75F and tied with the summer of 1999 as the 13^th coldest such month on record.  

AUTUMN 2014: The temperature for September 2014 averaged 69.0 degrees and was 2.6F below normal.  The month ranked as the 11^th warmest such month on record (since 1977) and the warmest since 1979.  There were 15 days with near to above normal temperatures. There were 3 days with maximums of 90F and higher. Temperature extremes included 95F on the 2^nd and 46F on the 23^rd.

The temperature for October 2014 averaged 58.5 degrees and was 1.2F below normal.  The month tied with September 1985 as the 7^th warmest such month on record (since 1977). The month was also the 5^th consecutive such month warm month on record.  There were 15 days with near to above normal temperatures. There were 3 days with maximums of 60F and lower. Temperature extremes included 79F on the 14^th and 38F on the 20^th.

The temperature for November 2014 averaged 44.5 degrees and was 5.1F below normal.  The month ranked as the 15^th coldest such month on record (since 1977) and the coldest since 1984. There were 9 days with near or above normal temperatures. There were 10 days with maximums of 60F and higher and 2 days of 70F or higher. Temperature extremes included 75F on the 4^th and 20F on the 19^th.

The season averaged 57.3F and tied with autumn 184 as the 15^th warmest such season on record.  The season was also the 11^th consecutive such season with above normal temperatures. 

RECIPITATION

WINTER 2013-14: Precipitation totaled 4.78 inches and was .84 of an inch above normal. The month ranked as the 13^th wettest such month on record and the wettest since 1992.  The most to fall in a 24-hour period was 1.20 inches on the 29^th. Measureable precipitation fell on 11 days.  Snowfall was above normal with 8.3 inches.

Precipitation totaled 2.82 inches and was .84 of an inch below normal. The month ranked as the 9^th driest such month on record and the driest since 2010.  The most to fall in a 24-hour period was .68 of an inch on the 11^th. Snowfall totaled 22.4 inches and was 12.9 inches above normal (230 percent of normal). The month ranked as the 5^th snowiest such month on record and the snowiest since 1978. Measureable precipitation fell on 12 days.  The most in 24-hours was .68 on the 11^th. Snowfall of one inch or more fell on 4 days. The most in a 24-hour period was 11.0 inches on the 21^st. 

Precipitation totaled 4.08 inches and was .95 of an inch above normal. The month ranked as the 11^h wettest such month on record and the wettest since 1986.  The most to fall in a 24-hour period was 1.14 inches on the 5^th. Snowfall was also above normal with 35.9 inches and was 26.0 inches above normal (363 percent of normal). The month ranked as the snowiest such month on record and the snowiest since 1994. Measureable precipitation fell on 11 days.  The most in 24-hours was .68 on the 11^th. Snowfall of 1.0 inch or more fell on 7 days. The most in a 24-hour period was 15.0 inches on the 13^th. 

Precipitation for the season totaled 11.68 inches and ranked as the 12^th wettest such season in record and the wettest since 1993-94.  The period Jan-Feb. 2014 precipitation totaled 6.90 inches and ranked as the 11^th driest such period on record and the driest since 2005 and 6^th consecutive driest such period with below normal precipitation. Snowfall totaled 66.6 inches and ranked as the 2^nd snowiest such season on record and the snowiest since 1995-96.

SPRING: Precipitation in March totaled 4.26 inches and was .14 of an inch below normal. The month ranked as the 18^th driest such month on record and the driest since 2002.  The most to fall in a 24-hour period was 2.79 inches on the 29^th. The area was sparred 2 coastal systems with snow falling totaling only .2 of an inch. The month ranked as the 3^rd least snowiest such month on record and the least snowiest since 2010. The most in a 24-hour period was .2 of an inch on the 13rd.  Snowfall for the season totaled 66.8 inches and tied with the 1993-94 season as the 2nd snowiest such season on record (1976-77) and the snowiest since 1995-96 season. The season was also the 2^nd consecutive such season with above normal snowfall. 

Precipitation in April totaled 7.81 inches and was 3.57 inches above normal. The month ranked as the 3^rd wettest such month on record and the wettest since 1983. The most to fall in a 24-hour period was 4.92 inches on the 30^th which was a record for the day. Snowfall was the below normal with only .3 of an inch recorded.  The month tied with April 1986 as the 3^rd least snowiest such month on record. The most in a 24-hour period was .2 of an inch on the 13rd.  Snowfall for the season totaled 67.1 inches and tied with the 1993-94 season as the 2nd snowiest such season on record (1976-77) and the snowiest since 1995-96 season. The season was also the 2^nd consecutive such season with above normal snowfall.

The above normal precipitation trend continued in May with 5.93 inches recorded. This is 1.47 inches above normal. The month ranked as the 8^th wettest such month on record and the wettest since 2011. The month ranked as the 2^nd consecutive month and the 4^th consecutive such month with above normal precipitation. The most to fall in a 24-hour period was 2.39 inches on the 23^rd. Precipitation in July totaled 7.26 inches.  The month ranked as the 6^th wettest such month on record and the wettest since 1988. The month was slo the 4^th consecutive month with above normal precipitation. The most to fall in a 24-hour period was 2.19 inches on the 2^nd. There were 4 overcast days and 7 clear days.
