TEMPERATURE

 

WINTER 2019-20: The pattern was dominated by a positive AO and NAO characterized by negative height anomalies across the high and northern latitudes. Heights were below normal ion the West and above normal in the East.  February was the warmest of the months with a monthly average of 39.4°F and was 3.4°F above normal.  The month ranked as the 7th warmest such month on record (since 1977) and the warmest since 1984.  Only 6 days averaged below normal. January’s temperature averaged 38.6°F and was 6.9°F above normal.  The month ranked as the 4th warmest such month on record and the warmest since 2006. 

 

The winter season temperature average 38.3°F and ranked as the warmest such season on record and the warmest since 2015-16.  The season the 5th consecutive season with above normal temperatures. Temperature extremes included 69°F on Jan. 11th and 12°F on Feb. 15.  There were only 3 days with maximums of 32°F or lower (normal 14).  There were only 51 days with minimums of 32°F and lower (normal is 65). 

SPRING:  The temperature for March averaged 47.4°F and was 5.2°F above normal.  The month ranked as the 14th warmest such month on record (since 1977) and the warmest since 2016.  The month was also the 2nd consecutive month with above normal temperatures.  Only 7 days averaged near or below normal. There was only 4 day with minimums of 32°F or lower (normal is 14) There were none with maximums of 32°F or lower (normal is 1).  There were 23 days with maximums of 50°F and higher and 10 days with maximums of 60°F and higher and 3 days with maximums of 70°F and higher. Temperature extremes included 78°F on the 20th and 23°F on the 1st.

 

The temperature for April averaged 49.7°F and was 1.5°F below normal.  The month ranked as the 3rd coldest such month on record (since 1977) and the coldest since 2018.  Only 10 days averaged above normal. There was only 1 day with minimums of 32°F or lower.  All days had maximums below 70°F.  There were 16 days with maximum of 60°F or lower and 4 days with maximums of 50°F or lower.  Temperature extremes included 68°F on the 28th and 31°F on the 17th.

 

The temperature for May averaged 60.5°F and was 2.3°F below normal.  The month ranked as the 5th coldest such month on record (since 1977) and the coldest since 2008.  The month was also the 2nd consecutive month with below normal temperatures and also the 2nd consecutive such month with below normal temperatures.  Only 9 days averaged above normal. There was 15 days with maximums of 70°F or above and 6 days of 80°F or higher.  Temperature extremes included 88°F on the 15th and 33°F on the 9th.    

The season’s temperature av52.6°F and ties with 1980 and 2000 as the 17th coldest such season on record.  Temperature extremes included 88°F on May 13th and 23°F on Mar 1.  There were only 5 with minimums of 32°F and lower.    

 

SUMMER: The temperature for June averaged 73.3°F and was 3.2°F above normal.  The month ranked as the 5th warmest such month on record (since 1977) and the warmest since 2009.  Eleven days averaged near or below normal. There was 4 days with maximums of 90°F or above.  Temperature extremes included 93°F on the 22nd and 46°F on the 1st.

 

The temperature for July averaged 80.5°F and was 3.0°F above normal.  The month tied with 2013 as the 2nd warmest such month on record (since 1977).  The month was also the 2nd consecutive month with above normal temperatures.  Ten days averaged near or below normal. There was 18 days with maximums of 90°F or above (normal is 10).  Temperature extremes included 98°F on the 19th and 66°F on the 2nd.

 

The temperature for August averaged 78.2°F and was 2.5°F above normal.  The month ranked as the 4th warmest such month on record (since 1977) and the warmest since 2018.  The month was also the 3rd consecutive month with above normal temperatures and the 3rd consecutive month with above normal temperatures.  Eight days averaged below normal. There was 12 days with maximums of 90°F or above (normal is 6).  Temperature extremes included 96F on the 10th and 59°F on the 20th.

 

The temperature averaged 77.3°F and ties with the summer 1993 as the 3rd warmest such season on record.  Temperature extremes included 89°F on July 19th and 59°F on Aug. 9th.  There were 34 days with maximums of 90°F or higher.

AUTUMN 2018: September’s temperatures averaged 69.4°F and was 1.2°F above normal.  The month ranked as the 14th warmest such month on record (since 1977) and the warmest since 2012.  The month was also the 7th consecutive month with above normal temperatures and the 4th consecutive such month with above normal temperatures.  Ten days averaged below or near normal. There was only 1 day with maximums of 90°F or above (normal is 1).  Temperature extremes included 90F on the 3rd and 43°F on the 22nd.   

 

The temperature for October averaged 68°F and was 1°F below normal.  The month tied with October 1978 as the 12th warmest such month on record (since 1977).  The month was also the 11th consecutive such warmest month.  For than half the month was above normal.  There was only 1 day with minimums of 32°F or lower.  Temperature extremes included 77F on the 15th and 31°F on the 31st.

 

November’s temperature 51.6°F and was 4.8°F above normal.  The month ranked as the 3rd warmest such month on record (since 1977) and the warmest since 2011.  Only 8 days averaged near or below normal.  There was only 2 day with minimums of 32°F or lower.  Temperature extremes included 80°F on the 9th and 27°F on the 19th.

 

The autumn temperature averaged 59.7°F and tied with autumn 2011 as the 2nd warmest such season on record.  The season is also the 2nd such season with above normal temperatures.  

 

The yearly temperature averaged 56.7°F and ranked as the 4th warmest year on record and the warmest since 2016.  The year was also the 6th consecutive year with above normal temperatures.   

 

PRECIPITATION

 

WINTER 2019-20: Precipitation totaled 11.29 inches and ranked as the 17th wettest such season on record and the wettest since 1986-87.  January was the driest month with 1.73 inches and was 1.83 inches below normal (49% of normal). The month ranked as the 8th driest such month on record and the driest since 2017. The period Jan-Feb. precipitation totaled 4.45 inches and ranked as the 7th driest such period on record since 2009. The period was also the 2nd driest such period on record.  Snowfall was below normal with only 6.6 inches (normal is 25.5’).  The season ranked as the 7th lest snowiest such season since 1988-89.  The season was also the 4th consecutive such season with below normal snowfall.  February snowfall only measured a trace  (normal is 10.2”) and ties with1981, 1998 and 2002 as the least snowiest such month on record.  Measurable snowfall of an inch or more fell on 3 days (normal is 5).

 

SPRING: Precipitation for March totaled 4.89 inches and was .75 of an inch above normal. The month ranked as the 14st wettest such month on record and the wettest since 1997. The month was also the 3rd consecutive month with above normal precipitation. Precipitation fell on 12 days of the month with the most to fall in a 24-hour period was 1.98 inches on the 23rd. Snowfall was well below normal with only a trace recorded (normal is 5.8”).  The month tied with March 1979, 86, 95, 2000, 02 08, and 10 as the least snowiest such month on record.  The month was the 3rd consecutive such month with below normal snowfall.  The most received in a 24-hour period was a trace on the 23rd.

 

Precipitation for April totaled 4.51 inches and was .63 of an inch above normal. The month ranked as the 15th wettest such month on record and the wettest since 1986. The month was also the 3rd consecutive month with above normal precipitation. Precipitation fell on 14 days of the month with the most to fall in a 24-hour period was 1.81 inches on the 13th which is a new record for the day.

 

May’s precipitation totaled 1.96 inches and was 2.06 inches below normal (44%). The month ranked as the 8th driest such month on record and the wettest since 1987. Precipitation fell on 12 days of the month with the most to fall in a 24-hour period was .60 inches on the 23rd.

 

Precipitation for the season totaled 11.36 inches and ranked as the 14th driest such season on record and the driest since 1988.  The period April-May precipitation totaled 6.47 inches and ranked as the 14th driest such season and the driest since 1991.

 

SUMMER: June’s precipitation totaled 2.67 inches and was 1.35 inches below normal (66%). The month ranked as the 13h driest such month on record and the driest since 2016. Precipitation fell on only 8 days of the month with the most to fall in a 24-hour period was 1.00 inches on the 28th.  Most of the month’s rainfall fell on the first 6 days of the month and at the end.  

 

Precipitation in July totaled 6.04 inches and was 1.75 inches above (141%). The month ranked as the 11th wettest such month on record and the wettest since 1994. The month was the 3rd consecutive such month with above normal precipitation.  The month also ranked as the 3rd consecutive such month with above normal precipitation.  The period June-July, precipitation totaled 8.71 inches and ranked as the 16th wettest such period and the driest since 1988.  Precipitation fell on only 10 days of the month.  The most received in a 24-hour period was 2.55 inches on the 10th.

The month ranked as the 18th driest such month on record and the driest since 2001.  The month was the 2nd consecutive month with below normal precipitation.  Precipitation fell on 15 days of the month.  The most received in a 24-hour period was 1.19 inches on the 3-4th. 

 

For the season, precipitation totaled 11.85 inches and ranked as the 22nd wettest such season on record and the wettest since 2000 and it was the 3rd consecutive such season with above normal precipitation.  The period July-August, precipitation totaled 9.18 inches and ranked as the 16th wettest such period and the wettest since 1999 and was also the 2nd consecutive such period with above normal precipitation.

 

AUTUMN: Precipitation in September totaled 3.84 inches and was .26 of an inch below normal (94%). The month ranked as the 19th wettest such month on record and the driest since 1985.  The month was the 2nd consecutive month with below normal precipitation.  Precipitation fell on only 7 days of the month.  The month was dry until the 29th-30th when 2.15 inches fell.  The most received in a 24-hour period was 1.19 inches on the 20th.  There were 10 clear days and only 4 overcast days.

Precipitation in October  totaled 5.92 inches and was 2.59 inches above normal (178%). The month tied with October of 2006 as the 11th wettest such month on record.  Precipitation fell on 12 days of the month.  The most received in a 24-hour period was 1.70 inches on the 29th-30th.  There were 11 clear days and 12 overcast days.

 

November’s precipitation totaled 4.54 inches and was 1.21 inches above normal (136%). The month ranked as the 22nd such month with above normal precipitation and the wettest since 1986.  The month was also the 3rd consecutive such month with above normal precipitation and the 2nd consecutive month with above normal precipitation.  Measurable precipitation fell on 8 days of the month.  The most received in a 24-hour period was 1.48 inches on the 30th.  There were 13 clear days and 5 overcast days.
