FEBRUARY 2012: The pattern was dominated by a positive NAO,  PNA  and AO index.  This resulted in a trough in the West and a ridge in the East.

The temperature averaged 40.6F and was 5.3F above normal. The month ranked as the warmest such month on record (since 1977) and the warmest since 1988. The month was also the 5th consecutive such month and the 4th consecutive month with above normal temperatures.  Only 2 days averaged near to below normal. The biggest departures occurred at the start of the month with values between 12 and 25 degrees above normal. There were 10 days with maximums of 50F or higher and 2 days with maximums of 60F or higher. Temperature extremes included 63F on the 1st and 20F on the 12th.         

Precipitation totaled 1.74 inches and was 1.38 inches below normal. The month ranked as the 7th driest such month on record and the driest since 2007. The most received in a 24-hour period was .82 of an inch on the 24th.  The trend of below normal snowfall continued in February with only .5 of an inch recorded.  The month ranked as the 4th least snowiest such month on record and the least since 2004.  The month was also the 2nd consecutive such month with below normal snowfall. There were 16 clear days and only 4 overcast days.
